McDonald
Sophia McDonald claimed to be the 'first white girl born in Coromandel". I have tried but failed to prove this fact and cannot locate any McDonald family in the area around 1854-55 when she was born. From 1852 until well into the 1870s, the Coromandel peninsula was the scene of a Gold Rush and presumably there were many itinerant families working here. See:- Coromandel Gold
This line requires more research, but Sophia's Marriage Certificate where she married Robert Notton on 27 May 1873 does not show her place of birth or parent's names. Her Death Certificate shows Coromandel as birthplace but not her parent's names. But Death Certificates are notoriously prone to contain errors.
Sophia and Robert had eight children, four sons and four daughters.
